DEAD BRINE SHRIMP - After the tide has gone out on this cold winter day millions of dead Brine Shrimp remain on the shore near Black Rock. During the summer months these dead shrimp that are left on the shore are fed upon by Brine Flies that swarm swarm along the shore line. As you walk through them they swiftly fly away and look like a black cloud around your lower legs and feet. They frighten children and some adults until you reassure them, and they come to realize that they don't bite. They are somewhat of a pest to man but a necessity to the Lake because of the benefit they provide by feeding on the dead Brine Shrimp and ridding the Lake's shores of the rot they would cause.
